To start

Superheroes protect all kids, of every color. What about you?

The idea

Your plan looks like this: «If this happens, then I'll do that». For example: «If someone calls Tomás “China boy”, then I'll say “his name is Tomás”».

Try it

Make your plan

The exercise

Your helper

Choose someone at home to help you: when they hear a nickname about color or a «bad hair», they'll say a secret word (for example, «full box!») so you remember your plan. And you can say it to the grown-ups too!

And if a nickname slips out: that's okay. Say sorry and try again tomorrow.

For today

Tell your helper your plan.

Which part of your plan will you use first?

To start

Racism doesn't give a warning. It shows up in the chat, on the field, in your own mouth. That's why it's worth deciding ahead of time.

The idea

«If this happens, then I'll do that.» For example: «If someone calls Martín “China boy”, then I'll say “his name is Martín”». (Gollwitzer & Sheeran, 2006)

A habit takes about two months, and slipping one day doesn't ruin anything. (Lally et al., 2010)

Build your plan

The exercise

Your full plan

1 · Your three «if… then». You already built them above.

2 · Your repair from lesson 7: did you do it yet? If not, when?

3 · Your ally: someone who'll ask you «what's their name?» when you use a color nickname.

4 · The day you slip: name it without punishing yourself, apologize if you said it in front of someone, and go back to the plan.

For today

Tell your ally your plan.

Logbook

Which of your «if… then» will be hardest?

What's next

The last lesson. And someone wants to tell you something.

To start

Everyday racism doesn't give a warning. It shows up at the table, in the chat, at work, in your own mouth.

That's why it's worth deciding ahead of time what you'll do.

The idea
  1. «If this happens, then I'll do that»

Concrete plans work much better than good intentions. (Gollwitzer & Sheeran, 2006)

«If [something concrete happens], then I'll [do something concrete].»

    For example:

    • «If someone calls another person by their color, then I'll say their name».
    • «If someone tells a racist joke, then I'll say “that's not funny”».
    • «If someone says “bad hair”, then I'll say “it's curly hair, and it's beautiful”».
    • «If I have to choose someone, then I'll ask myself if I'd choose the same with a different color».
  2. You'll slip again

A nickname, a joke or a phrase you learned as a kid will slip out. It's human: they've been there a long time.

A new habit takes, on average, about two months to become automatic, and skipping a day doesn't ruin the process. (Lally et al., 2010)

Try it

Build your plan

Build three sentences. Pick an option in each part or write your own.

The exercise · 10 min

Your full plan

1 · Your three «if… then». You already built them above.

2 · Your hardest phrase. Look at what you wrote in lesson 1. What will you say instead?

3 · Your home. Write the change from lesson 7 that you'll keep: pencils, books, toys, phrases.

4 · Your ally. Choose someone you trust and tell them your plan. Ask for something concrete: «If you hear me calling someone by their color, tell me their name».

5 · Your table. Write the name of someone you'll invite to your table this month.

6 · The day you slip. Write what you'll do when it slips out. Some help:

  • Notice it without punishing yourself.
  • Correct it in the moment: «Sorry, I meant ___ (their name)».
  • Go back to your plan the next day.
For today

Tell your ally your plan.

You've reached the last lesson. You'll look in the mirror again.

And there's someone who wants to tell you something.

Before you begin

Life slips by while we wait for it to start.

I'm not an expert in anything. I'm someone who gets things wrong a lot and is still learning how to live.

I made this place because happiness is almost never later: it's in the people close to you today, and in the day you're living right now.

You won't find sermons here. You'll find short routes to look at yourself honestly and change something, little by little.

It's always a good time to begin.
